絵本作家として
見返しの工夫
ヴァージニア・リー・バートンは、表紙から見返しを含めて全てが一つの物語であると考えていました。そのため、普通表紙の裏（見返し）部分は白紙のままの本が多い中で、彼女はそこにさまざまな工夫を凝らしています。『いたずらきかんしゃちゅうちゅう』の見返しには、大都市から鉄橋を渡ってトンネルに入り、小高い丘や山をいくつも回って次の駅まで続く線路が描かれています。子どもたちは車窓から、田舎の町や馬が引くスキで畑を耕している様子などを眺め、汽車にのっている気分で見知らぬ街に運ばれていきます。そしてページをめくると「ちゅうちゅう」が吐き出すものすごい煙に、人々が倒れそうなほどびっくりしているのを見て、大喜びで「ちゅうちゅう」と一緒に物語の中にすべり込むのです。『マイク・マリガンとスチームショベル』の見返しには、スチーム・ショベルの構造図が描かれています。スチーム・ショベルのどこがどんな働きをするのか、子どもたちは興味しんしんで眺めずにはいられません。『ちいさいおうち』の見返しは、「おうち」の前を行く乗り物の変化で、長い年月が流れることが判ります。最初は一人で馬に乗った人が通り、やがて馬は二人乗りの馬車を引き、次にはより早く走る4頭立ての馬車になり、そのうち自転車が現れ、いつの間にか馬の引かない馬車―自動車が現れ、大勢の人を運ぶ電車が走り、トラックが行きかいます。その頃には、「おうち」の周りには高層ビルが建っています。本文中にも、さまざまな車種の車が描かれていますが、見返しの中にはパンクした自動車の前で困り果てて叫んでいる人もいます。子どもたちは表紙を開いて見返しを眺めるだけで、今から起こる長い時代の変化を受け入れる心の準備ができることになるのです。

Fully Worked-out End Sheets
She had a firm belief that the whole book including covers and end sheets constitute a story. Many other books have blank inside of the cover, but she introduces lots of ideas there. “Choo Choo” has a drawing of train track running through a large city, an iron bridge and a tunnel, hills and mountains to reach the next station. Children can imagine looking out of the windows at rural towns and seeing horses plough the fields and feel that they are carried to a strange town in a train car. Turning the page, they see people overwhelmed to fall at awful amount of smoke puffed out by Choo Choo. Readers are joyfully excited into a story. The end sheets of “Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel” show detailed drawings of a steam shovel with its functional parts depicted. Readers cannot but carefully go through the drawing with lots of interest. The ones of “The Little House” show passage of long time represented by changes of vehicles passing in front of the house. It starts from a man on a horse, a two-person carriage pulled by a horse, a faster coach and four, a bicycle, an automobile or a carriage without horses, and trains and trucks. Readers can see high-rise buildings around the house. We can see illustrations of many different cars in the text. The end sheets show a person at a loss and crying near a car with a flat tire. Children are prepared to accept long lasting change of time waiting for them.
